Invitation to a Training on “Introduction to GIS (with applications to the livestock sector)”

Organized by: IFPRI and EEA, Addis Ababa

Date: July 25-27, 2018

Venue: EEA, Addis Ababa

The training is organized by IFPRI-ESSP and EEA. The training aims at acquainting the target participants in using GIS software proficiently. Participants will learn methods and techniques to use immediately in their work/research. Some key topics covered are:

·         Introduction.

·         Lab 01: ArcGIS Basics.

·         Lab 02:  Advanced Symbology.

·         Lab 03:  Chloropleth mapping in Arc-GIS.

·         Lab 04: Working with Attribute Tables in ArcGIS.

·         Lab 05: Understanding Projections.

·         Lab 05 : Part 1: Changing Data Projections in ArcMap..

·         Lab 05 : part 2: Bringing Field Data into the ArcGIS software program

·         Lab 06: Exporting external database information from ArcMap.

·         Lab 07 : Data Integration and Thematic Mapping.

·         Lab 08 : Spatial Proximity Analysis.

·         Lab 09: Buffering for distance calculations and area definition.

·         Lab 10: Travel Time Raster and Market Access Visualization.

Real-life data in the livestock sector will be used to demonstrate some key techniques. Participants are expected to have taken a minimum of BA level course in economics/statistic/development studies.Participants are also expected to come with their laptops in order to work on the software. Light refreshment will be provided for the training days.
