Value Chain Assessment of Selected Vegetable Products in Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia

Abstract: 

The objective of the study is to assess major constraints and opportunities of vegetable value chain in the Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia focusing on onions and tomatoes. Production and marketing constraints, roles, functions, and relationships of the major value chain actors or operators and their corresponding market channels were identified and analyzed in this paper. The study used both primary and secondary data and qualitative methods such as focus group discussions, key informant interview and direct observations. A mix of value chain analysis tools such as market channel analysis, value chain mapping, and other relevant tools were employed wherever it was appropriate. Major constraints identified at production stage are mainly related to input supply (lack of quality and certified vegetable seeds, irregular supply of fertilizers, poor quality of pesticides and irrigation pump), poor irrigation extension and agronomic practices, low access to finance, lack of production calendar and limited diversification. On the marketing sides the major challenges identified in the study are weak coordination of the vegetable value chain actors, especially unfair practices or misbehavior of brokers in the market and the small margin that the farmers receive (despite their major contribution to the value additions) compared to other value chain actors. There are times when the revenue from sales of the product will not even cover its harvesting costs let alone the production and marketing costs. In summary, the study found out that the farmers (from among all the vegetable value chain actors and players) were at disadvantaged positions both at production and marketing stages of tomatoes and onions value chain which needs immediate remedy for improving the performance of vegetable production (both quality and quantity/yield) and marketing. Key recommendations for addressing the challenges and improve the performance of the vegetable value chain were also made. Some of these are enhancing the supply of quality inputs, improving regulatory systems and standards, application of good agronomic practices for improving yield, quality and safety of products, setting market rules and orders, legalizing/formalizing brokering businesses, enhancing the bargaining power of the farmers, as well as value chain financing, coordination and collaboration across all the value chain actors.
