Abstract:

Result based on the two waves of the Ethiopian urban household socioeconomic surveys(1994 and 1997)" and " the survey of adolescent fertility and employment status of the youth(1990)" in Urban area, showed that youth(15-29 years old) unemployment rose sharply between 1990-1997, with further increases in unemployment rates for all ages group in 1994 and 1997. Returns to dedication at all levels (primary, secondary and tertiary) have declined, but real wages have increased in 1997 compared to 1994. Moreover, the economy was at dis-equilibrium during the 1990-1994 transition, but was in the process of recovery in the 1994-1997 periods. Most of the new entrants and those that weren't in the labor force are becoming self - employed (probably in the informal sector), and as a result, participation in self-employment has increased shapely in 1997 compares to 1990-1994
