Urbanization and Fertility Rates in Ethiopia

Abstract:

Fertility Rates Are Important Determinants Of Both Overall Population Growth And Demographic Transitions From High To Low Age Dependency Ratios, Which In Turn Have Important Consequences For Economic Growth, Poverty Reduction And Improved Health And Nutrition Outcomes. Ethiopia Currently Has One Of The Highest Fertility Rates In The World, Although There Are Marked Differences Between Rural And Urban Fertility Rates. This Paper Explores The Drivers Of Rural And Urban Fertility Rates Using Count Data Models, Including Systematic Tests Of Differences In Key Determinants. The Results Suggest That Rural-Urban Fertility Gap Is Explained By Both Difference In Levels Of Explanatory Variables And Differences In Impacts. Raising Female Secondary Education Is Found Be Negatively Related With Fertility, With Higher Impact Especially In Rural Areas. Increased Family Planning Awareness Is Also Found To Have A Negative Impact On Women's Desired Number Of Children In Rural Areas
